Bridge of dreams: the Mary Griggs Burke collection of Japanese art

Published to accompany the March 2000 exhibition of about 200 objects from the Mary Griggs Burke Collection of Japanese art (dating to before 1868) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The text and color illustrations reveal the profound impact of three great waves of influence from the Asian continent: the introduction of Buddhism from Korea, the arrival of Zen Buddhism and with it the art of ink-monochrome painting, and the Chinese literati concept of painting. They also illustrate the tastes and values of the courtly and military elite and the interests of patrons. The collection includes a range of objects from Neolithic ceramics from the third millennium B.C. to refined lacquerwares, rare sculptures of Shinto gods, ink drawings, and folding screens. Murase, professor emerita at Columbia U. and research curator at the Metropolitan Museum, has advised Mrs. Burke in her collecting activities over the last three decades.
